Nestled along the sun-drenched Costa del Sol, Nerja is not just famous for its charming old town and stunning viewpoints — it’s also a prime spot for kayaking adventures and other water sports. Whether you’re paddling along the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo or gliding into sea caves, kayaking in Nerja offers a unique way to experience southern Spain’s coastline. Here’s what to expect, what to wear and pack, and key tips to make the most of your trip.

What You’ll See on a Kayak Tour in Nerja
Most guided kayak routes start from Burriana Beach and head east along the coast. Along the way, you’ll explore:
- Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs – Towering limestone cliffs that rise dramatically from the sea
- Hidden sea caves and grottoes – Some of which you can paddle into or swim through
- Natural waterfalls – Like the one at El Cascada de Maro, which spills down the cliffs into the sea
- Crystal-clear waters – Ideal for spotting fish, sea urchins, and even octopuses
Some tours even include time for snorkeling, cliff jumping, or swimming breaks.
What to Expect on a Guided Kayak Tour
- Duration: 2 to 3 hours
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate – basic fitness is enough
- Starting point: Burriana Beach or Playa de Maro
- Includes: Kayak, paddle, life jacket, waterproof bags, and often a guide with GoPro photos
Tip: Morning tours offer calmer waters and cooler temperatures.

What to Wear
Since you’ll be getting wet, wear:
- Swimsuit or quick-dry athletic wear
- Water shoes or secure sandals (avoid flip-flops)
- Hat and sunglasses (with straps)
- Rash guard or UV shirt for sun protection
What to Pack
Keep your bag light, and bring:
- Waterproof phone case which you can hang around your neck and stuff down your life jacket
- Sunscreen (reef-safe recommended)
- Towel and change of clothes, there are public toilets, restaurants and beach cabanas all around
- Reusable water bottle – take this with, it can get hot out there!
- Snorkel gear (optional – some tours provide it) – this was great but I did struggle to get back in the kayak after snorkeling without the help of the guide, as a solo traveller I also found this difficult to snorkel and look out for the kayak so make a friend if you are solo.
- Small dry bag for personal items (if not provided) (I used Educare Aventura and they supplied lockers for 2 Euro’s and the locker was quite big)
Most tours will supply a dry container or waterproof pouch, but bring your own if you’re unsure.

Yes! Kayaking in Nerja is suitable for:
- Families with children (check minimum age, usually 6–8 years)
